We are extremely excited to present Dr. M.A. Jayashree’s classic Yoga Sutras course online for the first time ever! Jayashree has been teaching her Yoga Sutras course to thousands of students in Mysore for many years, and it is considered her specialty. Now you have an opportunity to take the full course with her from anywhere in the world!
The Yoga Sutras, attributed to the sage Patanjali, is a foundational text of classical yoga philosophy composed of 195 aphorisms, or sutras. The single most important text of Yoga Philosophy, it outlines the path of Ashtanga Yoga, often referred to as the “Eight-Limbed Path,” which serves as a comprehensive guide to spiritual liberation. The Sutras cover various aspects of yoga practice, including ethical principles (Yamas and Niyamas), physical posture (Asanas), breath control (Pranayama), sensory withdrawal (Pratyahara), concentration (Dharana), meditation (Dhyana), and ultimately, union with the divine (Samadhi). Through systematic discipline and self-awareness, practitioners aim to quiet the fluctuations of the mind and attain a state of inner peace and realization of the true self.
In this course, we will learn to chant each Sutra through the 'Sruti Parampara' call and response method, which is a traditional and effective method of pronunciation, remembering and understanding Sanskrit language and texts. The method is accessible to all, and is in itself a traditional and transformative yoga practice. Jayashree will work with each participant individually to ensure everyone gets a chance to practice chanting the sutras each week.
Each week, we will learn to chant roughly 5-10 slokas with Jayashree, followed by the word by word Sanskrit explanations of each one. In this way, learning the entire sutras over a period of 6 months, students have the ability to practice over a period of time and really digest the sound and meaning of each sutra before continuing to the next. In this way, we achieve a deep understanding of this foundational text over a 6-month period of the course.
This method of learning the Sanskrit texts of yoga with the explanations and translations of an experienced teacher is a time-tested, invaluable way of learning the core of yoga philosophy.
In addition to the live Zoom classes, the recordings of each class will be available to each student for 1 year after the course concludes, so that if you are unable to participate in the live Zoom sessions, you can follow the course at your own pace.
In addition to the live Zoom sessions, participants will also receive a link to view the recording of each class for practicing through the course. Each class session will be a minimum of 90 minutes.
